How to Keep Your Kids Teeth Healthy

Having healthy teeth is a goal that all parents want to help their children reach. The key to helping them reach that goal, it’s to start to care for your children’s teeth as soon as the baby teeth appear. Lifelong habits are easier formed when started young. so follow some of the suggestions in this article to help your child maintain good dental health.

Tips For Healthy Kids Teeth

Try to put into practice as many of the following tips as you can. Doing so will help your child get into a good oral hygiene routine:

Set the example

As parents, you have no doubt seen how your children love to imitate you. If you brush your teeth and floss at the same time as your child they are going to do so with more enthusiasm.

Start brushing your kid’s teeth when they are young

As mentioned before, healthy habits can last a lifetime. So encourage your little one to brush twice a day, every day. When your baby has its first tooth appear you can clean it with a cloth or small brush. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends you start using fluoride toothpaste at 18 months, using an amount around the size of one grain of rice. Train them to spit out the toothpaste and then increase the amount until you reach the size of a pea. Children can learn how to brush their baby teeth on their own from 3 years of age. As their teeth start growing together you can introduce flossing and mouthwash.

Take your child to the dentist

The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends taking your child to the dentist within 6 months of their first baby tooth appearing or from 1 year of age (whichever comes first). Your visits to the dentist should then be done every 6 months after that.

Open communication

Talk to your child about what will happen during their visit to the dentist. Being positive will help reduce any anxiety.

Limit their sugar

Tooth decay is usually the result of high sugar levels in the diet. Educate your child about the dangers of eating too many sweets and drinking sugary drinks. You may be able to get them on your side.

Brush sufficiently

Kids need to brush their teeth sufficiently to remove plaque. A minimum of 2 minutes is usually required. Using tartar dyes or a timer is an effective training method. You can also download fun apps for your kids too.

Consider sealants

Some parents use tooth sealants for their children. Sealants help prevent cavities and tooth decay avoiding the need for fillings.

Don’t share toothbrushes

Using the same toothbrushes is one way that germs spread, so clearly identify who’s belongs to who will help with this. Encourage your child to rinse their toothbrush with tap water after brushing to keep the level of bacteria down.
